Meta ads for fashion brands in India: angles, policy and a testing plan

Fashion on Meta in India is a volume game with thin margins and high returns. Fit, fabric and colour accuracy drive both conversion and RTO, so the best ads answer those questions before the click. This guide covers angles that reduce wrong-size orders, formats that show fabric honestly, the festive and wedding calendar, and a testing plan that counts returns before it declares a winner.

Angles worth testing

Fabric and feel

Hypothesis: Showing fabric close up and naming the composition will reduce hesitation for buyers who have been let down by online fabric quality before.

  • 100% cotton, 180 GSM. Here is how it looks in daylight.
  • Pure linen that softens after every wash. Watch the drape.
  • Hand-block printed in Jaipur. Zoom in on the print edges.

Fit on real body types

Hypothesis: Showing the same piece on models of different heights and sizes, with sizes worn named on screen, will raise conversion and lower size-related returns.

  • Same kurta on three heights. Sizes worn are on screen.
  • She is 5'2" and wearing an S. He is 6'0" in an L.
  • Our size chart in 10 seconds, measured flat.

Occasion styling

Hypothesis: Ads that tie a piece to a specific occasion (office, sangeet, Diwali puja) will convert better than ads that show the product alone.

  • One co-ord set, three ways: office, brunch, dinner.
  • What to wear to a sangeet when you want to dance comfortably.
  • Diwali puja to card party in one outfit.

Easy exchange

Hypothesis: Stating the exchange policy plainly in the ad will lift first-time purchases more than a discount of similar cost.

  • Wrong size? Free exchange within 7 days, pickup from your door.
  • Order two sizes, keep the one that fits. Here is how exchanges work.
  • Exchange on us. We pick up, you pick the new size.

Craft and origin

Hypothesis: Naming the weave, region or artisan cluster will justify a higher price for buyers who value handmade, compared with a price-led ad.

  • Chanderi woven on a handloom in Madhya Pradesh.
  • Each Ajrakh print takes several rounds of dyeing and washing.
  • Meet the weavers behind our Kota doria range.

Wardrobe value

Hypothesis: Showing how one piece pairs with things the buyer already owns will increase add-to-cart for buyers comparing prices.

  • Five outfits from one white shirt and what is already in your cupboard.
  • A plain black kurta that works with jeans, palazzos and a saree drape.
  • Build a work week from four pieces.

Formats

Try-on Reels (9:16)
Movement shows drape and fit. Name the size worn and the model's height on screen to cut wrong-size orders.
Catalogue (Advantage+ catalogue) ads
Fashion has wide SKU ranges. Dynamic catalogue retargeting shows people the exact pieces they viewed.
Carousel of looks
One piece styled several ways in one ad. Lets you see which look gets the most taps.
Fabric close-up static
A macro photo of weave and print is cheap and answers the main quality question directly.

A testing plan

  1. Write a hypothesis per ad, for example 'naming the size worn and model height will lift conversion and reduce size exchanges'.
  2. Test new concepts that differ in angle or format: try-on Reel, fabric close-up, occasion carousel, catalogue retargeting. Do not count five crops of the same photo as five concepts.
  3. Give each concept at least 2× target CPA in spend and 3 days before a verdict. Kill ads that hit 2× target CPA with zero purchases.
  4. Track returns and exchanges by ad, not just orders. Pull RTO and return data from your logistics partner at least weekly and join it to the ad that drove the order.
  5. Iterate winners one variable at a time (hook, first frame, model, price display) and judge on contribution after COD, RTO, returns and GST.

Worked example: breakeven ROAS

Illustrative assumptions, not benchmarks. Replace with your own numbers. 5% GST is used because apparel priced up to ₹2,500 per piece is at 5% after the September 2025 GST changes. Pieces above ₹2,500 attract a higher rate, so check your HSN code and price band.

Questions

How do I reduce RTO on fashion orders from Meta?
Show fit honestly in the ad (sizes worn, heights, measured size charts), confirm COD orders by WhatsApp or call before dispatch, and test a small prepaid incentive. Then compare contribution per order, not order count.
Should I use catalogue ads or creative ads?
Usually both. Catalogue ads work well for retargeting people who viewed products. Creative ads (Reels, carousels) do more of the work with cold audiences who do not know the brand yet.
What GST rate applies to clothing?
After the September 2025 changes, apparel up to ₹2,500 per piece is generally at 5%, with a higher rate above that. Confirm the rate for your HSN code with your accountant, because it changes your margin per order.
Is it worth writing ads in regional languages?
For festive wear especially, yes. Onam, Durga Puja, Navratri and Pongal are regional moments, and native-language copy reads as more relevant than a translated English ad.
